Sauron Marvel Legends Build a Figure Review

Last fall I bought a 1990’s ToyBiz Sauron figure at a comic convention. It was a cool figure, and I thought it would be great for photography. The guy at the booth said they were coming about with a Sauron Build A Figure series. How many times have a bought a loose figure only to have a new version come out soon afterwards? Well there was Toy Biz Sasquatch I got then shortly later the Sasquatch build a figure, was announced, I bought a loose Leonardo mini-fig and literally the next day the Karai Bike Escape Building Set (79118) with Leonardo set was announced. I’ve bought custom Captain Marvel and Storm(1)(2) LEGO mini figs only to have official versions released later. So it happens, just part of being a collector.

Here’s the ToyBiz 1990s Sauron figure.  You may have seen him on the blog earlier. He’s nicely sculpted, but there’s not a lot of paint, His jaw opens and there’s articulation at arms and legs. Cool figure but a little hard to stand. I tried to several times to get a good shot of him standing overhead. The image is not as intimidating as I envisioned.

I looked up the Sauron build a figure and it looked awesome. But I really didn’t have that much interest in the figures from the series. I already had a Deadpool. Lady Deadpool was neat. Wolverine and Bishop are cool looking figs the but not worth $20 a pop to me. Sauron was cool but not $120.00 cool.

A few months pass and the post-Christmas sales start. I see the Lady Deadpool at a decent price online. Which led me to to start checking online and offline for other deals. I didn’t find any figures on sale, but there’s always the secondary market. Some people part out the sets. I won a few auctions and started collecting the parts. I gave in and got Deadpool in boxers figure and rounded off the set with a couple more eBay purchases.

Finally, I have Sauron. He is massive. This figure is amazing. The sculpt is detailed. There are scales on the torso, veins in his arms and neck. The head is large with a movable jaw, pointed teeth, and nasty red eyes. Sauron has huge freaking wings. They are segmented so parts can move as the arms move.

The paint job is well done with great hues of green and yellow on the torso and wings. The leathery textured wings have some slits in them that give it a more realistic appearance. The loin cloth is sculpted to show motion. Blue pouches give a visual pop to his belt. There’s not a lot of paint to the legs, arms, or tail but they do have sculpted scales.

You can move his legs, turn his feet, bend knees but this isn’t a figure you would crouch. It is tall and has a wide wing span. There’s articulation at his head, neck and jaw, shoulders, and elbows. His hands rotate. The tail is great to balance him standing but I need some of those action figure stands so I can pose him flying.

Sauron builds a figure standing in a jungle scene.

Now that’s an intimidating Sauron.

This is only the second BAF I have collected. The other was Dormammu which I got cause I liked the series and got many of the figures super cheap at Target post-Christmas. Then finished it with parts via E-bay. You can see Dormammu on this post.

What do you think?

Do you collect any Build a Figures? Would you read more toy reviews? Who has the best stands for posing figures?

Easy Roller Dice: Review

I received some gaming products to review from Easy Roller dice. The Ohio based company sent me two polyhedral dice sets.

Easy Roller Dice Co. is made up of table top gamers and educators.  We create awesome products for gamers, teachers and other professions.

We’re constantly looking to increase our collection with things that are awesome and fun.

Some of us here started gaming in the late 80’s and early 90’s playing D&D 2nd Edition though we’ve played other editions and even jumped all the way back into 1e.

We love table top gaming, a good beer and getting together as much as possible on gaming night.

Ten piece dice set with bag

easy_roller_bag

First of all the dice are beautiful. They have a cool brown hue with some marbling. The dice have a nice solid weight and heft. They feel good in your hand makes good solid thunk when they land on the table.  The numbers are clear and easy to read. The dice come in several colors.

The set comes with a nice looking bag. you always need a bag for your dice.

easy_roller_dice_set

10 piece set includes:

4 D6s, 1D4, 1 D8, 1 D10, 1D12, 1D20, and a 1 percent dice

I keep them on my desk. My 5 year old son likes to play with them rolls the on the desk and adds the numbers. Sometimes times he asks me the numbers. He likes to roll and see who gets the highest total.

Metal Dice

These might be my new favorite dice. They are gorgeous looking. The metal has an awesome copper color. They sound great landing on the table. And like the other set, they feel good in your hand.

The set includes a cool storage case. It has a faux leather look and the inside has foam with cutouts to keep the dice from rattling around. You can remove the foam and store three sets of dice, or about 21 dice.

The Easy Roller Metal dice set includes 1D4, 1D6, 1D8, 1D10, 1D12, 1D20. and a percent dice. They also come in gun-metal and Rose Gold. The gun-metal dice have color options for the numbers Red, Green, Yellow, Orange, Electric Blue, Powder Blue, Pink, Purple, Gold, and White.

Summary

These are some great dice. I look forward to gaming with them.

Other Products

They sell bulk dice, 7 and 10 piece sets, dice bags, dice cups and mats and beard oil.

Word of advice on the metal dice. If you want a fair game, don’t let Magneto use them.

Lowe’s Black Widow Build and Grow

Black Widow Build and Grow!

August 13 was Black Widow day at Lowe’s. I unfortunately had to work so my wife and son picked up the set and brought it home. We built it Tuesday night.

Black widow build and grow

This was the easiest build so far, just four steps including the wedge base. And only one size of nails so you have to sort them. There’s a couple places where you add stickers before you can hammer nails. But nothing too tricky.

The Black Widow moves at the waist. She spins so it looks likes she attacking with her baton.

Thor God of Thunder Build and Grow!

Build and Grow!

Last Saturday we made another trip to Lowe’s for Build and Grow. This week’s build was Thor. We were attending an art  show in another city, so had to attend a different location. They were set up different from my local Lowe’s, they didn’t have work stations set up so we just built on the floor.

thor_2803

This was a fairly easy build. The instructions were clear for adults but smaller kids would need help. There are some steps where you have to place stickers before nailing. The instructions point these out just be sure to read them a couple of times.

Like all the other heroes, Thor has an action feature, he has an audio component. Press the button in his chest to hear thunder. It is not too loud. So should bother someone if a child is playing with it in the same room.

After completing the build. We showed it to the Clinic Captain and got a certificate. The Clinic Captains fill them out while the kids were building the project. That was a nice bit of organization on their part. It has the child’s name , the project name, and the date. The graphics are similar to the ones on the patches and instruction booklets.

The figure comes with a wedge-shaped base with the character’s name on it. Once you get all six the wedges make a circle with the Avengers logo. The Avengers stand back to back in a cool display.

Lowes build and Grow Avengers

There are two more Build and Grow Avengers events. The next one is Black Widow and Hulk finishes out the collection. The date for the Black Widow set is Aug 13 and the Hulk date has not been posted yet.

What’s Included?

You can put your child’s name on the apron and iron on the patches. Then they can wear it the next time.

This Summer your Child can Assemble the Avengers!

Build and Grow!

Need a free activity for your little geek? Lowe’s offers free building clinics, the children’s version is called Build and Grow.  The summer theme is Avengers: Ultron Revolutions. Every other Saturday, they have a new kit.

I took my son to one a few weeks ago. They were set up in the lumber section.  There were lots of work stations set up for the event. I gave them my waiver and they ask “Are you building here?” We said yes and they gave us the set and a child sized hammer. We found a table and sorted the pieces.

lowes build and grow

The first set was Captain America. The kit had several pieces of pre cut wood, two sizes of nails, stickers and instructions. Once sorted the pieces, we began building. There were a couple missteps in building but it was easy to back up and fix. My son was distracted by all the noise and got a little restless. But I told him we were almost done.

The instructions were clear for adults but kids will need help. There are some steps where you have to place stickers before nailing. Some parts have to be set between others before you can nail. The instructions point these out just be sure to read them a couple times.

IRON_MAN

The final product is neat. A couple of weeks later they had the Iron Man. I had to work early that day so my wife took my son to pick up the set and they brought it home to build later. We did the same thing this past weekend with the Falcon Build and Grow event.

lowes build and grow Falcon fron teh avengers kit

Each character has an action, Captain America moves his shield, Iron man has a light up arc reactor. and Falcon flaps his wings. The figures also come with a wedge shaped base with the character’s name on it. Once you get all six the wedges make a circle with the Avengers logo. The Avengers stand Back to back in a cool display.

group_2694

There are three more Build and Grow Avengers events. The next one is on July 23 and the featured character is Thor. After that is Black Widow and Hulk finishes out the collection. The dates for the last two haven’t been posted yet, but so far it’s been every other Saturday.

What’s Included?

The free kit has a wooden project, instructions with a comic on the back,  a patch of that project, an apron and goggles. The event I went to we saw kids with aprons and goggles. We didn’t get either when we checked in. When we returned the hammer, we saw the aprons and asked for one, but I didn’t see goggles. You can put your child’s name on the apron and iron on the patches. Then they can wear next time.

To attend the event you need to register at Lowes Build and Grow. Use the store locator to fins the nearest event. Fill out the form. Then print out the waiver and bring it to with you. Registration for the next event opens Monday after an event.

  • Thor July 23
  • Black Widow Aug 13
  • Hulk Aug ?

UPDATE I have seen other articles stating that the events are every other Saturday year round. But that may not be the case. They are skipping a week between the Thor and Black Widow projcts. Always check The Lowe’s site for the event date.

They also sell some Build and Grow kits. They had a couple of wood cars sets and some child sized hammers. The kits are not in the area where the event occurred. At our location they were near the Key cutting section. You can see some of the sets on the Build and Grow site.
